Koh Libong Island

Koh Libong Island with about 40 square kilometres is by far the biggest island of Trang Province and about 45 kilometres away from the provincial capital. There are 3 villages on the island, that are mainly inhabited by Muslim people: Maphrao Village, Khlong Wa and Batubute Village. The highest mountain rises to 311 metres and its characteristic shape is a landmark, that can be seen from as far away as Lanta Island.

Besides fishing, the inhabitants earn a living on rubber taping and the products of their fruit orchards.

Ko Li-Bong Island's rather flat Juhoi Cape to the east is famous for its rich bird life and has been declared a no hunting area. More than 10,000 migrating birds take a rest here on their way from Siberia to the South and can be watched from November to December. Here is also the place, where a small island arises regularly with the high tide coming and separating it from the main Island.

At Thung Yakha to the west of the island are hundreds metres of beach, only at some places interrupted by rocky sections coming out of the water at low tide. This is the place, where only few people will come to. Another beach is Ao To Kea, who is neighbouring the above mentioned. There is also a small waterfall coming down the hills.

Khao Mukda is a limestone outcrop on the eastern side of Libong Island, that rises to 200 metres, from here it might be possible to see the dugongs, that are protected in this area.

Ban Libong or Maphrao Village is located to the North at a canal cutting through the mangrove forests. Here the boats from Chao Mai Village on the mainland arrive after the 20 minutes crossing. Fish and lobster farming provides the main income of the locals in this area.
