Scorpion Tailed Cruises. Since long Scorpion-Tailed Cruises  were served as cargo Cruises sailing between the northern region and Bangkok. Almost a century that they disappeared from the river when the northern railway-route arrived at Chiang Mai. Today they brought back to life to serve tourists cruising along the Ping River.

The origin of the Scorpion-tailed Cruise

Initially the first Cruises was built approximately in the 18th century by a local shipbuilder who get the idea from a Cruise-shaped coconut shell floating in the river with a scorpion on it.The scorpion’s instinct makes that it holds up its barbed tail all the time. So the original one was built following the sight of what he saw.

And now the legend of a uniquely northern-style Cruise has been revived by Ms Songsri Wongvech, a tourism industry master graduate of Chiang Mai University, with the support of Mr Samak Laosatirawong. He re-built the small fleet that now giving the service to  tourists cruising and exploring the charm of Chiang Mai along the both sides of the Ping River.

Friendly to environmen: The Scorpion Tailed Cruises are completely designed to save the  environment. The Benzene
engine has been installed instead of the  Diesel engine, which causes pollution to the river, they have no toilets on board (so go before you embark)again avoiding river, are much quieter than their long-tailed counterparts,Particularly the buoyancy compartments in the front keeping the Scorpion-tailed Cruises safety  afloat.

Detailed Cruise Itinerary

Half Day

Transfer tourists to the Wat Sri Khong’s Cruise landing,Then tourists are given a brief about the historical background of the Cruise.The river Cruise offers lively picturesque of several  historical places along the riverbanks, such as:a white chedi that locals call Gew in front of the municipality,a girdered-footbridge sapan the river between the oldest trader community of Wat Gate and Warorot Market,The Chiang Mai’s oldest shopping center.The Chang pier(where hundreds of elephants were used ti haul logsfrom the river in the old days),site of the first city’s : First bridge, First Christian church, First post office, and many more attractions including lifestyles of the local people who lived along the both sides of the river

During the trip,the tourists can be experience the atmosphere of the past, learn the story of the banks of the river, hear some of the clever fishing techniques of local fishermen, and see pictures from a century ago until the present, all explained by staff who specialized in this field.

The trip takes between an half-hours to two hours. Delicious desserts shall be served for free during a short break and relax at the Scorpion-Tailed Cruise village set in tropical fruits garden  by riverside

Capacity : there are three different Cruise sizes, for 15, for 30, and for 50 persons. Life vests and Insurance are provided for every passenger.
